01

What it was

Vladimir Tatlin's commissioned design for a monument and headquarters for the Communist International in Petrograd.

Tatlin proposed two iron spirals surrounding rotating glass volumes for legislative, executive and information functions. The work progressed through drawings and a large wooden model exhibited publicly, giving it official and material form without a feasible construction path.

02

Existence timeline

Commission

Tatlin begins work on a monument for the Third International.

Model exhibited

A large wooden model makes the rotating 400-metre design public.

Construction recedes

Material scarcity and engineering impossibility prevent realization.

Models return

Museums and artists reconstruct the vanished proposal at multiple scales.

Design reaches full proposal

Drawings and the exhibition model communicate the planned steel spiral and rotating internal volumes.

03

Why it ended

The economic and technical conditions of early Soviet Russia made the proposed scale and mechanisms unattainable. The original model disappeared and the monument was never built.

04

Last confirmed trace

Historic photographs, drawings, texts and several later reconstructions preserve the concept; the best-known image is Tatlin standing beside the 1920 model.
05

What it left behind

Tatlin's Tower became a global emblem of Constructivism and of architecture used as a machine-like political image rather than a completed building.

06

How we classified it

No generally obtainable public release existed; demonstrations, internal prototypes or archival fragments do not constitute public access to the proposed work.

The strongest verified milestone maps to approved_or_funded in Arrival Score V1.
