01

What it was

The second main building of Tokyo's Imperial Hotel, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in a richly ornamented Mayan Revival vocabulary.

The hotel opened in 1923 and famously remained functional through the Great Kantō earthquake, though later accounts complicated the heroic legend. Its low, elaborate complex became an international landmark but was difficult to maintain and poorly suited to changing hotel economics.

02

Existence timeline

Design work begins

Wright develops the new Imperial Hotel over a long commission.

Hotel opens

The complex enters full public use and survives the Great Kantō earthquake.

Demolished

The aging Tokyo structure is dismantled for redevelopment.

Lobby reopens

The preserved entrance block is reconstructed at Meiji-mura.

Construction begins

Work starts on Wright's earthquake-conscious hotel complex in central Tokyo.

03

Why it ended

The main building was demolished in 1967–68 and replaced by a high-rise hotel. The central entrance and lobby were dismantled and reconstructed at the Meiji-mura open-air museum.

04

Last confirmed trace

The reconstructed lobby, original furniture, decorative fragments, drawings, photographs and hotel archives preserve a substantial but incomplete experience.
05

What it left behind

The building remains central to Wright's global reputation and to debates over whether a relocated architectural fragment preserves a work or creates a new museum object.
