01

What it was

A proposed adaptable cultural laboratory for London, conceived by theatre director Joan Littlewood and architect Cedric Price.

The Fun Palace replaced fixed rooms with cranes, gantries and moveable elements that could support theatre, learning, play and public experimentation. Detailed drawings, engineering work and several site studies turned the idea into a serious architectural project.

02

Existence timeline

Collaboration begins

Littlewood and Price begin developing a new kind of public cultural facility.

Fun Palace takes shape

The scheme evolves into a flexible kit of platforms, cranes and activity zones.

Lea Valley proposal

A major London site becomes the focus of planning and engineering work.

Design archive expands

Drawings, models, schedules and correspondence develop the unexecuted building in detail.

Active project ends

The Fun Palace remains unbuilt as site and institutional support disappear.

03

Why it ended

Planning, funding and site negotiations never aligned. The project remained unexecuted and its active development faded during the 1970s.

04

Last confirmed trace

The Canadian Centre for Architecture preserves hundreds of drawings, models, films, letters and technical studies from the project.
05

What it left behind

Its adaptable, participatory logic influenced later cultural buildings, especially the Centre Pompidou, and still frames debates about architecture as an enabling system rather than a finished object.

06

How we classified it

The proposed archive unit never reached ordinary public access in the form being documented.

The strongest verified milestone maps to detailed_preproduction under Arrival Score V1.
