What it was
A cooperative action role-playing game from Lionhead Studios for Xbox One and Windows 10.
Fable Legends reimagined the series as four heroes against a player-controlled villain. Microsoft announced it publicly, demonstrated it at major events and admitted invited players to a functioning closed beta, creating real but restricted public access.
Existence timeline
Microsoft reveals a multiplayer Fable title for Xbox One.
Selected ordinary players receive ongoing access.
Microsoft ends the project and begins the process of closing Lionhead.
The remaining servers go offline.
Microsoft expands the restricted beta while positioning the game as a Windows 10 and Xbox One service.
Why it ended
Microsoft cancelled the game in March 2016 and proposed closing Lionhead Studios. The beta remained temporarily accessible, then went offline on April 13; purchases made inside the test were refunded.
Last confirmed trace
Beta footage, event demonstrations, trailers, interviews and former players' accounts survive. The official servers and test client no longer provide access.
What it left behind
Its end marked the closure of the studio that created Fable and became a prominent example of a near-launch service game disappearing with its servers.
How we classified it
Members of the public could use a test, beta or otherwise restricted version, but the project never graduated to normal general availability.
The archive unit reached real but explicitly limited public access without general availability, so Arrival Score V1 assigns 98.
