London's first great railway gateway was dismantled, then much of its stone was rediscovered inside an East London waterway.

What it was
The monumental Doric gateway to the original London Euston station, designed by Philip Hardwick for the London and Birmingham Railway.
The arch gave Britain's early intercity railway a ceremonial threshold. A major preservation campaign later argued for relocation, but railway modernisation plans required the land occupied by the arch and Great Hall.
Existence timeline
The first terminus and its ceremonial Doric gateway enter public railway use.
A new railway headquarters and Great Hall are built between the arch and platforms.
British Railways decides that rebuilding and electrification require the land occupied by the old entrance structures.
A prominent preservation campaign fails and contractors begin dismantling the arch.
The Doric Arch and Great Hall disappear during the station reconstruction.
Historian Dan Cruickshank identifies a large quantity of the original stone in the Prescott Channel.
Why it ended
The preservation campaign failed and the arch was dismantled in 1961–62 as Euston was rebuilt for West Coast Main Line electrification.
Last confirmed trace
Original gates, drawings and photographs survive, while a large proportion of the dismantled stone was located in the Prescott Channel in the 1990s and has supported reconstruction proposals.
What it left behind
Its loss became a defining British conservation case and an enduring warning about treating major transport heritage as an obstacle to modernisation.
How we classified it
The arch served a working public station for more than a century before demolition. Surviving stones do not make the gateway itself available.
