Why it ended
BlackBerry licensed consumer BBM to Emtek, which ended the service on 31 May 2019 after user and revenue decline. The separate enterprise product continued.

Screenshots, exported chat fragments, surviving devices and BBMe preserve elements of the experience, but consumer PINs no longer connect.
What it left behind
BBM's conventions became standard across messaging, even as the original network lost the platform advantage that created them.
